Robert N. Haywood saved Mary Fung Chang from drowning, Toronto, Ontario, December 28, 1972. Haywood, 49, landfill foreman, saw Miss Chang, 23, floating in deep water 70 feet from shore in Lake Ontario. Removing his jacket, Haywood entered the cold water and, despite a growing numbness in his legs, waded and swam to Miss Chang, who was semiconscious. Haywood began towing Miss Chang back to the bank but found control of his legs diminishing. By swimming in a nearly erect position and pushing Miss Chang ahead of him, Haywood proceeded to within 35 feet of the bank but then felt he could swim no farther. He lowered his legs, found footing, and then waded to the bank while dragging Miss Chang after him. She recovered. 53131-6005
