Robert R. Wagner rescued Rebecca Lukatch-Jones from assault, Detroit, Michigan, October 22, 1994. In the third-floor vestibule of a hospital parking garage, Ms. Lukatch-Jones, 41, was confronted by a man who then struck her repeatedly with a brick. A hospital employee, Wagner, 41, mental health technician, was climbing the stairs to the floor when he heard Ms. Lukatch-Jones scream. Wagner entered the vestibule and saw the assault. He immediately ran to the assailant and, grasping him from behind, applied a choke hold, freeing Ms. Lukatch-Jones. She fled. Wagner struggled with the assailant, who struck Wagner on the head with the brick. The assailant then slipped out of his jacket and ran away. Wagner encountered Ms. Lukatch-Jones and took her to the emergency room; she required hospitalization for treatment of wounds to her head. Wagner also was treated at the emergency room for head injuries, from which he recovered.
