Robert Sidney Cox saved Maurice G. Farrior from drowning, Willard, North Carolina, June 14, 1941. While wading in the North East Cape Fear River, Maurice, 13, schoolboy, got into unwadable water and was submerged. Two of his brothers tried to aid him, but he struggled with them, and they swam to an island. Maurice drifted in a swirling current of two m.p.h. to water 10 feet deep 22 feet from the island. Cox, 23, student, who was fatigued and gasping from previous swimming, swam toward Maurice. He called to the others that they would have to aid him. Maurice then rose briefly; and Cox swam to him, having swum 168 feet. He pulled Maurice’s head above the surface and calling for help, towed him 22 feet to wadable water. Maurice, who was unconscious, was pulled onto the island. Cox crawled out and was almost exhausted, suffering sharp pain in his chest. He worked over Maurice, who revived. Cox had a cough and was weak for several days. 39081-3237
