Robert Stewart, 54, streetcar conductor, attempted to save Rugiero Curci, 9, from electric shock, New Haven, Connecticut, August 14, 1918. Rugiero picked up the broken end of an electric light wire which carried a current of 2,500 volts. He was knocked unconscious and fell across the wire. Stewart, wearing a pair of very old rubber gloves, attempted to separate Rugiero from the wire but was immediately shocked and fell unconscious on the wire. Stewart was rescued by two young men, who dragged him away by means of a strap. Rugiero was fatally injured. Stewart was severely burned on his hands and knees, and one of the fingers of his right hand had to be amputated. He was disabled 30 weeks. 19480-1694
