Robert V. Sheehan rescued Ichiro Yamasaki from burning, San Francisco, California, December 20, 1982. Yamasaki, 54, was trapped and burning in his car following a highway accident. Sheehan, 26, police officer, broke the driver’s window of the car and made several attempts to pull Yamasaki through it, but each time he was driven back by worsening fire conditions. He then opened the passenger door, leaned inside to the waist, and freed Yamasaki moments before the car’s interior was engulfed in flames. Both men recovered from burns they sustained.
