Robert Van Alyne, Jr., died attempting to save Kristy R. Hernandez from drowning, Cheyenne, Wyoming, August 1, 1985. Kristy, 6, was trapped by rising floodwaters atop a car along with her mother and two others. Van Alyne, 33, deputy sheriff, waded through the swift current to the car, grasping a rope that had been extended from the car to a point out of the current. He took Kristy onto his back and began to wade from the car, but he lost his grip on the rope and was swept away with Kristy. Their bodies were found the next day; both had drowned. 60576-7005
