Robert W. Lemon helped to rescue Denise R. Reid from burning, Oak View, California, February 5, 1990. Miss Reid, 19, was semi-conscious in the front seat of a burning car after a highway accident, her foot pinned between the seat and passenger door. Driving nearby with another man, Lemon, 40, safety coordinator, saw the fire and ran to the car. Lemon attempted unsuccessfully to dislodge Miss Reid’s foot. When the other man arrived, after having called help, Lemon and he extended their upper bodies through the opened driver’s door into the car, the front end of which was engulfed in flame. Although flames extended to the dashboard through the opening of the windshield, which was missing, Lemon and the other man freed Miss Reid, pulled her from the car, and carried her to the safety. The car was shortly engulfed in flame. Miss Reid was hospitalized nine days for second-degree burns to her left hip and back and other injuries. Lemon recovered from minor smoke inhalation.
