Robert Wayne Wood died attempting to help save Kevin M. Bates from suffocation, St. Marys, West Virginia, October 4, 1984. Bates, 22, was overcome by natural gas fumes inside an above-ground tank that contained 40 inches of water. Alerted by a co-worker, Wood, 26, service rig tool pusher, climbed atop the tank and entered it for Bates, but he was overcome by the fumes, as were two other men who had entered. The four men were removed by others. Bates recovered after hospitalization, but Wood drowned.
