Roger W. Bardwell died after saving a boy from a runaway pavement roller, Evanston, Illinois, September 17, 1994. Two young brothers were playing atop a pavement roller parked near a construction site when its engine started and the 19,000-pound vehicle began to move in reverse. From a point nearby, Bardwell, 69, retired school administrator, immediately ran to the side of the roller. He reached up, grasped one of the boys, and set him down on the ground. The boy’s brother had jumped to safety. Continuing alongside the roller in an apparent attempt to stop it, Bardwell fell and was struck by the vehicle. He died shortly of extensive injuries.
