Roger W. Wells, 40, guard, attempted to save James E. Dougherty, 21, still man, from suffocation, Heidelberg, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1916. (See case of EDWARD DAVIS.) Wells, who was in poor physical condition and had had no experience with fumes, reached the kettle after Davis’s first attempt and volunteered to enter for Dougherty. A rope was tied around him; also, a perforated rubber cup with a sponge in it was adjusted to his nose and mouth, but as he entered the manhole, it was disarranged. He descended and knelt over Dougherty but found himself being affected and was helped out of the kettle by means of the rope. He gasped and coughed but was not overcome. He was disabled two weeks, suffering from congestion of his lungs. 16474-1215
