Romeo Caringola, 36, clothing presser, saved Edward R. Zinn, 36, timekeeper, from drowning, Rockaway Point, New York, September 5, 1936. Zinn was washed from a gap in a jetty into the Atlantic Ocean and drifted in water 35 feet deep in a current of three miles an hour. Caringola dived from the jetty and then swam 150 feet to Zinn, who then was slightly under the surface. Taking hold of Zinn, who was unconscious, Caringola pulled his head above the surface and tried to swim toward the jetty but made no headway. Caringola trod water, and the men drifted 225 farther from the jetty. A boat then reached them, and they were taken to the jetty. Zinn was revived.
