Ronald F. Ottoson attempted to save Luis Ybarrondo and Wayne A. Creek from drowning, Moose, Wyoming, June 19, 1971. On a snow-covered mountain, Luis, 9, and Creek, 36, fell into a cavern, pulling with them considerable snow which turned to slush in draining water falling 20 feet from the cavern opening. Using an anchored rope, Ottoson, 30, police officer, descended in the falling water to the bottom of the cavern. The slush had formed a dam, and the water in the cavern was rising steadily. Despite Ottoson’s efforts as he worked from a rock projection, the rising water soon covered Luis and Creek. Ottoson climbed out of the cavern. A rescue team removed the bodies of Luis and Creek.
