Ronald G. Nielsen saved Lisa L. Homich from burning, St. Paul, Minnesota, December 14, 1973. In a frame dwelling, fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom where Lisa, 4, was playing while the man looking after her was downstairs. Nielsen, 28, maintenance man, was attracted by the smoke and, learning from the man that Lisa was in the bedroom, entered the dwelling. Nielsen got to the second floor but was forced to retreat because heat and smoke were severe. On his second attempt he reached the bedroom and kicked open the door. Smoke and heat were intense in the bedroom, where the flames were spreading. Nielsen, coughing and feeling dizzy due to the worsening conditions, crawled into the room, found Lisa, and removed her from the dwelling. 53724-6129
