Ronald Lee Sutton died attempting to save Monica M. Chavez from drowning, Chicago, Illinois, July 11, 1991. Monica, 11, was swimming in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal when she began to struggle against the current. She called for help. Sutton, 44, a welder and maintenance man at work for a company on the bank of the canal in that vicinity, was alerted. He entered the water and started to swim toward Monica, but before reaching her, he stopped swimming and called for help. He then submerged. Monica was rescued by others, but Sutton drowned.
