Ronald Melvin Long rescued Alfred V. Jackson from burning, Washington, District Of Columbia, June 6, 1979. Jackson, 34, was in a police helicopter when it crashed and burst into flames that quickly engulfed the wreckage. Long, 31, truckdriver, ran to the helicopter, where only Jackson’s head was visible amid the burning debris. By making several attempts, sustaining minor burns, long pulled the unconscious Jackson out of the wreckage. Jackson’s burns proved fatal.
