Ronald R. Barreras saved Hope A. Alvarado from being struck by a train, Santa Fe Springs, California, August 26, 1972. The horse being ridden by Hope, 14, stopped with its front feet alongside a railroad track on which a freight train was approaching. Seeing that the horse refused to move from the train’s path, Ronald, 14, schoolboy, rode his own horse to a position alongside Hope. Grasping the reins of Hope’s horse, Ronald forced the animal away from the track; but his own horse moved into a position parallel to the track. The left leg of Ronald was severed below the knee by a side extension of the passing engine, which stopped 1,800 feet beyond. Hope was unharmed. Ronald recovered after being hospitalized. 53275-6022
