Ronald T. Peters rescued John M. and Jake M. Hupp from burning, Salem, Oregon, October 21, 1989. At night, brothers John, 4, and Jake, 3, were in a bedroom of their mother’s apartment when fire erupted in the living room. Peters, 27, tinsmith, who was in an apartment next door, was alerted to the fire and went to the scene. He crawled into the living room but was forced to retreat because of blistering heat and dense smoke. He ran to the back of the apartment and climbed through a window into the boys’ bedroom, in which the smoke precluded visibility. Peters found John, passed him out the window, then found Jake a short distance away and likewise passed him out the window before exiting himself. Both boys suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns, and they recovered. Peters incurred burns to his shoulders and right arm, and he too recovered.
