Ronald W. Hunter, Jr., attempted to rescue India D. Anderson from assault, Gastonia, North Carolina, December 9, 1991. India, 12, was in the driveway of her family’s home with her mother and a friend when they were shot at by a neighbor who had heavily armed and barricaded himself in his house across the street. Wounded, India staggered across the street and collapsed in the front yard of another neighbor, Ronald, 17, maintenance worker. Ronald, who had been watching the assault from his family’s house, ran outside to India. Grasping her by the arms, he dragged India toward the house as the shooting continued. India was struck again, and Ronald was shot in the face. He collapsed unconscious near the house, then, having regained consciousness, escaped inside during a lull in the shooting. India was mortally wounded. Ronald was hospitalized two days for his wound, which included fractured facial bones. He recovered
