Ronnie Gene Woodall helped to rescue Brenda L. Capri from burning, Dunn, North Carolina, December 5, 1989. Mrs. Capri, was in the driver’s seat of a burning van, pinned by the steering column, after a highway accident. Having observed the accident, Woodall, 36, prison supervisor, ran to the scene and entered the van through its rear doors. Unable to reach Mrs. Capri because of the dense smoke inside the van, he exited and went to the driver’s door, where he joined a man who had opened the door and was holding Mrs. Capri. Partially entering the van, Woodall, using a piece of metal, lifted the steering column from Mrs. Capri while the other man pulled her out. Woodall, the other man, and a third who had joined them then carried her to safety. The van was shortly engulfed in flame. Mrs. Capri was hospitalized 25 days for third-degree burns to her legs and other injuries. Woodall recovered from minor smoke inhalation.
