Rosalie G. Murillo, 13, schoolgirl, saved Louis Martinez, 11, from drowning, Los Angeles, California, May 30, 1952. Louis and his 9-year-old brother became exhausted while swimming in Hollenbeck Park Lake and floundered in deep water 75 feet from the bank. Their calls for help attracted Rosalie, who ran 20 feet to the bank, arriving just after the brother of Louis sank and was drowned. Kicking off her shoes, Rosalie waded 20 feet and swam 55 feet to within two feet of Louis, who suddenly submerged, only his hand remaining visible. Taking hold of the hand, Rosalie drew Louis to the surface. He broke free and began flailing his arms. Briefly submerging herself, she obtained a hold on Louis and lifted upward on him. She emerged behind Louis and with effort swam pushing him 20 feet toward the bank. A man operating a motorboat reached them and aided by Rosalie lifted Louis from the water. Relieved of Louis’s weight, Rosalie was able to swim to wadable water. Louis had lost consciousness but was revived. Rosalie was tired and winded but recovered. 42576-3893
