Roy A. Fees died attempting to save E. Albert Heaton from drowning, Elmdale, Kansas, August 10, 1910. Fees, 25, mail carrier, swam 18 feet to Heaton, 26, who had become distressed while swimming in the Cottonwood River 15 feet from the bank where the water was nine feet deep. He grasped at him, then Heaton caught Fees and both went down in a struggle.. 5471-451
