Roy A. Powers, 49, railroad section foreman, saved Hulda W. Swenson, 75, from being killed by a train, Rockford, Illinois, June 14, 1943. Mrs. Swenson, who was deaf, walked on a crossing onto a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 35 m.p.h. Powers, an employee of a different railroad company, ran 20 feet, crossing one rail to a point behind Mrs. Swenson; and taking hold of her shoulders, he jerked her backward and fell backward. A step on the locomotive struck Powers and Mrs. Swenson on a leg of each, and they fell close to the track. Mrs. Swenson sustained fractures of her left leg and left wrist. Powers sustained a severe fracture of his left leg. 39890-3332
