Roy G. Allen saved Alice T. Hall from being run over by a train, Tampa, Florida, November 18, 1913. Alice, 1, crawled to a railroad track and stopped over a rail when a freight train was approaching her at a speed of about 13 m.p.h. Allen, 27, brakeman, who was in the cab of the locomotive, saw her when the locomotive was 125 feet from her. While the engineer was trying to stop the train, Allen crawled through the fireman’s window, ran along the running board, and stepped down over the steam chest to the bumper timber and across it. He jumped from the pilot toward Alice when it was six feet from her. One of his feet touched the ground between the rails for an instant as he grabbed the child. He swung off the track with Alice and cleared the bumper timber by about a foot. The front of the train stopped 30 feet beyond the point of rescue. 12659-1124
