Roy Kenneth Davis, 14, schoolboy, died attempting to save James Alexander, 13, schoolboy, from drowning, Louisville, Kentucky, September 4, 1919. James waded from the bank of the Ohio River into water over his depth and began floundering. Roy, who could not swim, waded eight feet from the bank and paddled seven feet to James, using water wings. He grasped James with one hand, and James threw his arms around Roy’s neck, and they went under the surface. They rose struggling violently and then went down again and were drowned. 19942-1597
