Roy W. Davis attempted to save Amanda E. Husnik from being struck by a runaway automobile, Listowel, Ontario, November 16, 1990. Amanda, 5, was thrown from the passenger side of a moving car that had been parked, its motor running, in the lot of a store. She was then run over by the car, which traveled backward in circles in the lot. Working nearby, Davis, 43, food vendor, immediately ran to the scene and attempted to stop the car but was struck by it and knocked to the pavement. The car continued to circle, striking Davis additional times. Two other men responded to the scene: one engaged in entering and stopping the car while the other ran to Davis and dragged him from its path. Amanda was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead of head injuries. Davis required extensive hospitalization for severe injuries to his chest, and contusions and lacerations.
