Russell L. Klein saved James F. May from drowning, East Brady, Pennsylvania, March 5, 1940. James, 11, broke through ice on the Allegheny River into water 21 feet deep 30 feet from the nearer bank. Honeycombed ice extended 35 feet from the bank. From the opposite bank Russell, 17, schoolboy, ran 720 feet on the ice to James over the same course he had taken and took hold of his hand. Russell began to pull him upward but broke through. He shoved James partly onto the ice and tried to climb out, but the ice broke again. Russell then got partly on the ice, pushed James around behind him, and helped him to climb upward. A man then crawled to a point near them and by means of a pole pulled James and then Russell onto the ice, and they went to the bank. 38274-3160
