Russell M. Naab saved Alvin E. Tipton from burning, Auburndale, Florida, February 27, 1971. At night Tipton, 32, truckdriver, was trapped in the cab of his tractor-trailer when it overturned, the two sections separating and lying about 10 feet apart. Fire broke out at the engine and spread along spilled diesel fuel to the trailer. Naab, 25, mail carrier, ran to the rear of the cab as flames rose 15 feet at the front end. Coughing from the dense smoke, he kicked in the window glass. He grasped Tipton, who was only semiconscious, and pulled him partially through the window opening. Tipton’s foot was caught. Extending his upper body into the cab, where flames had appeared, Naab freed Tipton and then pulled him out of the vehicle. Soon afterward the rig was totally afire.
