Ruth Irwin Jenkins, 20, student, saved Hubert A. Church, 32, farmer, from drowning, Oscar, Kentucky, August 9, 1929. Church, who was heavily dressed, jumped from a sinking rowboat into Turner Lake 80 feet from the bank, swam 10 feet, and then sank. Miss Jenkins, who weighed much less than Church and was fully clothed, jumped from a diving board close to the bank and swam 45 feet to him. She raised him to the surface and, supporting him, swam 40 feet toward the bank. Another man aided her in taking Church a few feet to the diving board.
