Ruth M. Adams, 38, housewife, saved Peggy S. Thrailkill, 9, from drowning, College Park, Georgia, March 24, 1949. While attempting to cross a pond on an elevated cable, Peggy, who could not swim, fell into water seven feet deep 35 feet from the bank. Her father swam to her but quickly sank and was drowned. Mrs. Adams, who was underweight and convalescing from an operation, was apprised of the accident and ran 200 feet to the pond. She plunged into the water and swam 35 feet near the bank in search of Peggy, who floated unconscious with her head just beneath the surface. Directed by persons on the bank, Mrs. Adams swam to Peggy and raised her head from the water. She clasped Peggy to her side and with great effort swam 35 feet to a raft at the bank. Others lifted Peggy from the water, and Mrs. Adams reached the bank. Peggy was revived and recovered. Mrs. Adams collapsed from exhaustion shortly afterward but recovered. 3657-41698
