Ruth Vanlandingham, 21, school teacher, died attempting to save Vera Meade, 24, or M. Frances Crawford, 17, from drowning, Russellville, Arkansas, May 24, 1913. The women were bathing in the Illinois Creek. Miss Meade and Frances got into deep water 20 feet from the bank, and Miss Vanlandingham, a poor swimmer, waded and swam to them from shallow water and grasped one of them. They struggled and went beneath the surface, and all were drowned. 11004-903
