S. Ethel Scurlock helped to rescue Jacob V. Dodenhoff from a homicidal attack, Greenville, South Carolina, December 24, 1930. At night in his office, Dodenhoff, 50, coal business manager, heard some one in a coal bin, and carrying a shotgun, he ran out of the office and ordered the person, whom he thought was a thief, to surrender. A large man revealed himself and approached him. Dodenhoff called to Miss Scurlock, 29, stenographer, to telephone for policemen. As the man drew closer begging Dodenhoff not to give him over to the police, he suddenly lunged forward and with one hand grasped the barrel of the shotgun. Then with his other hand he drew a revolver from his pocket, thrust it toward Dodenhoff’s chest, and fired. Dodenhoff knocked the assailant’s arm upward, and the bullet went over Dodenhoff’s shoulder. Miss Scurlock ran a few feet from the office to the assailant, who appeared desperate, and with both hands grabbed his right forearm tightly in an effort to prevent him from lowering his arm to fire. In a scuffle the assailant retained hold of the shotgun with his left hand and twisted and turned his upraised right hand. Dodenhoff tried to twist the shotgun out of the assailant’s grasp. A man who thought the revolver had been knocked out of the assailant’s hand then arrived and grasped his arm to prevent his escape. In a scuffle the assailant moved 45 feet to a street and pulled Miss Scurlock and the others along. Policemen then arrived and handcuffed the assailant. 31046-2641
