S. Ralph Verge saved Leonard J. Long, Jr., from drowning, St. Alban’s, Newfoundland, June 2, 1971. While riding his bicycle on a wharf projecting into Bay D’Espoir, Leonard, 11, went off the end and dropped into the water. A nonswimmer, he floundered as he drifted with the current in deep water. Ralph, 16, ran to the side of the wharf opposite Leonard. Without removing any of his attire, Ralph dived into the cold water and reached Leonard, who was unconscious. Holding Leonard’s head above water, Ralph took him 30 feet to where a man had descended a ladder at the side of the wharf. The man took Leonard from Ralph who, tired and winded, followed the man up the ladder. Leonard was revived.
