Salvador Sanchez rescued a woman from assault, El Monte, California, May 21,1992. A man armed with a gun entered a small store and robbed it, then forced the clerk, a 22-year-old woman, into a back room and began to assault her. The manager of the store, Sanchez, 27, then returned to the premises after having run an errand. He went to the back room and saw the woman pinned to the wall by the assailant, whose back was to Sanchez. Sanchez immediately entered the room and hit the assailant. The assailant then turned on Sanchez and shot him once, in the head. The assailant fled thes tore, but he was apprehended a month later. Sanchez was hospitalized three weeks for treatment of his wound, which required surgery, and he was unable to work for a year.
