Sam S. Wollner, 20, foreman, saved Romney O. Hagan, 29, carpenter, from drowning, Santa Rosa Island, Florida, June 18, 1916. While swimming in the Gulf of Mexico south of Santa Rosa Island, Hagan was carried seaward by the current. He tried to swim to shallow water but could make no progress. A lifeguard swam to him and tried to take him to shallow water, but he made no progress. They were 400 feet from shore. Unsuccessful efforts were made to swim to them with a rope and to toss the rope to them. Wollner swam 200 feet to Hagan, grasped him, and lifted his head above the surface. The lifeguard released Hagan and swam to shallow water. Wollner swam 50 feet toward shore with Hagan and then grew tired. A man swam to them with a rope, which Wollner grasped, and they were drawn 50 feet to wadable water. A breaker then struck Wollner, and he fell unconscious. Hagan was unconscious. They were taken to shore and were revived. 17399-1484
