Sam Washington rescued Betty B. Krug and helped to save Fred J. Krug, Sr., from burning, Prospect Heights, Illinois, October 21, 1978. In a highway accident, the two-door sedan containing Mrs. Krug, 74, and her husband, 77, rolled over onto its top; and leaking gasoline ignited. Washington, 76, ran to the burning sedan and managed to create an opening through which he was able to reach into the inverted vehicle. He grasped Mrs. Krug and pulled her out. Washington returned to the sedan and, on his second attempt, obtained a hold on Krug. Washington pulled Krug about halfway out and then was helped by others in fully removing him from the sedan, on which flames were spreading. Mrs. Krug had suffered extensive burns Krug had experienced multiple cuts, and Washington had sustained minor burns.
