Samuel C. Oliver, Jr., rescued Irene H. Atherton from burning, Harrison Valley, Pennsylvania, January 7, 1927. Irene, 5, was sick in bed on the second floor of a children’s home when an explosion occurred in the basement of the building and fire spread rapidly. Oliver, 21, fruit inspector, climbed a post to the roof of a porch, broke a window, and groped around the room searching for Irene. He entered the next room, which was already afire and was full of smoke. He finally found Irene on the floor and carried her, as he groped his way, to a window and then down a ladder to the ground. Irene was badly burned and died that night. 27067-2213
