Samuel D. Beeman saved Glenda Y. Dulaney from drowning, Ravenden, Arkansas, February 1, 1996. Ms. Dulaney, 30, was the driver of an automobile which left the highway, went down an embankment, and entered the Spring River. Filling with water, the car began to sink at a point about 55 feet from the bank. Other motorists stopped at the scene, including Beeman, 38, college student. Although the air temperature was in the 20s, Beeman waded into the river, then, despite being partially disabled by arthritis, swam to the car. He told Ms. Dulaney, a nonswimmer, to calm down. He then opened the driver’s door, pulled her out of the car, and, maintaining a hold on her with one arm and stroking with the other, swam back to the bank, towing her. Ms. Dulaney was taken to the hospital where she was treated for exposure to the cold water, and she recovered. Beeman, too, was cold, and he recovered in about two days.
