Samuel F. Hargett saved S. Holstun Darden from suffocation, West Point, Georgia, June 25, 1913. Darden, 44, farmer, was overcome in a well 30 feet deep. His wife begged the first men to arrive to go down for Darden and offered them money if they would go, but they refused. She asked Hargett, 22, farmer, and he said he would go. He then hesitated, and his mother begged him not to go. After again being asked to go, he crawled through a hole 15 inches square in the cover over the well, held to the well rope, and descended to the bottom by using rough steps in the sides of the well. He tied Darden and climbed up as the men hoisted Darden ahead of him. Hargett crawled through the hole without assistance. Darden was revived in two hours. 11379-1111
