Samuel J. T. Conover saved Elizabeth A. Dickison from drowning, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, January 9, 1916. Miss Dickison, 21, broke through weak ice on Lake Quinsigamond 400 feet from the bank, where the water was 90 feet deep. Conover, 40, printing superintendent, who weighed 75 pounds more than Miss Dickison, approached the hole cautiously and, when two feet from the edge, got down on one knee. He thrust his other foot forward and attempted to brace himself, but his foot went through the ice. He thrust his foot forward again, extended a four-foot-long branch to Miss Dickison, and drew her partly onto the ice. Conover then grasped her wrist, and while the ice was sagging and water was running over it, he worked himself and Miss Dickison 10 feet from the hole. 16454-1382
