Samuel L. Catherwood died attempting to save Dorothy S. and Robert E. Perkins from drowning, Dallas, Texas, October 3, 1971. Mrs. Perkins, 26, and her son, Robert, 8, attempted to wade to dry ground from a truck stalled in rising floodwater which had overflowed from a creek near the highway. They stepped into a drainage ditch, lost their footing, and were carried toward the mainstream of the creek, where the current was strong. Catherwood, 26, public works employee, waded into the floodwater and proceeded toward Mrs. Perkins and Robert. He stepped into the drainage ditch and was submerged briefly. Catherwood drew near to Mrs. Perkins and Robert; but all three persons were swept into the deep water of the flooded creek and drowned.
