Samuel M. Stowe, 26, assistant foreman, saved George A. Hemminger, 20, from drowning, Oregon City, Oregon, July 20, 1906. Stowe jumped into a canal at the Willamette River Falls and, in a current running 7 m.p.h., supported Hemminger until they were assisted up the 10-foot perpendicular sidewall.
