Samuel Strauber, 17, garment cutter, died attempting to save Helen Gottfried, 14, from drowning, Coney Island, New York, July 2,1920. Helen, while attempting to swim in deep water 70 feet from shore, became frightened, called for help, and threshed wildly. Samuel swam about 40 feet to her, grasped her, and tried to push her toward shore, but he made little if any progress. Helen took hold of him, and Samuel was under the surface part of the time. They suddenly became separated, and Samuel took a stroke or two, then sank, and was drowned. Helen was carried a few feet toward shore, where two or three men took hold of her and took her to shore.
