Sarah Lou O’Dell saved a woman from drowning, Richlands, Virginia, March 14, 1975. When she saw a woman floating face down in the flood-swollen Clinch River, Miss O’Dell, 31, schoolteacher, removed her coat and boots and waded into the cold water. Swimming, she overtook the woman as they reached partially-submerged trees in deep water. Miss O’Dell held to a tree and supported the woman while four men formed a chain to reach them from the bank. The men pulled the woman and then Miss O’Dell from the water.
