Scott D. Ammerman, 17, student, attempted to save Thomas B. Evans, Jr., 10, from drowning, Curwensville, Pennsylvania, December 27, 1913. Thomas broke through thin ice 60 feet from the bank of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, where the water was seven feet deep. Scott walked toward him and threw a bough of a tree to him, but he made no attempt to grasp it. Scott then crawled toward him but broke through the ice six feet from him. He began breaking the ice between himself and Thomas, but Thomas sank and was drowned before Scott got near enough to reach him. Scott tried unsuccessfully to climb out of the water and was later pulled out by another boy with a bough. 12344-1331
