Scott Lee Symington saved Linda W. Whittaker, and died attempting to save Gaye C. Hoener from drowning, Connorville, Michigan, August 5, 1969. While wading along the bank of the Presque Isle River, Miss Whittaker, 14, and Miss Hoener, 15, slipped and fell into turbulent water just below Manido Falls. They were caught in a whirlpool where the water was 15 to 20 feet deep, appearing only briefly at the surface. Scott, 15, high school student, entered the water and swam to the center of the whirlpool, where he made a surface dive. He brought Miss Whittaker to the surface and thrust her out of the whirlpool. While Miss Whittaker was making her way to calm water, from where she was aided to the bank, Scott made four additional dives at points in the whirlpool, where Miss Hoener once more had appeared briefly. Scott surfaced and, although he appeared to be winded, he made no attempt to grasp a nearby rock projection. He submerged again and did not reappear. The bodies of Miss Hoener and Scott later were recovered.
