Scott Miller saved Dorothy C. Pederson from burning, San Carlos, California, February 23, 1996. Ms. Pederson, 62, lay unconscious on the floor of her apartment, which was on the second floor of her mother’s two-story house, after fire broke out in the apartment’s kitchen area. Discovering the fire, Miller, 29, engineer, alerted Ms. Pederson’s mother, then learned from her that Ms. Pederson was on the second floor. Miller entered the house and went to the second floor, where smoke and flames were increasing. Finding Ms. Pederson about six feet from the top of the stairs, Miller grasped her by the arms and dragged her to the stairs, then picked her up and carried her downstairs and outside to safety. The apartment was shortly engulfed by flame. Ms. Pederson was hospitalized for treatment of smoke inhalation, and Miller was given oxygen at the scene.
