Sebert T. Scott, 16, ferryman, attempted to save Russell E. Hawkins, 10, from drowning, Marmet, West Virginia, March 5, 1939. Russell fell from a bridge into the Lens Creek and drifted to a point 50 feet from the bank in a current of 3 m.p.h. in water 12 feet deep. From a point on an abutment 13 feet above the water, Scott, who was clothed, jumped into the water and then swam 10 feet to Russell. There was a struggle, during which they drifted into a culvert. They became separated. Russell drifted through the culvert and was rescued by a man who extended a pole from the bank. Scott lost consciousness, drifted at least 80 feet farther, and lodged under the surface. Three men swam to him and rescued him. Scott was revived.
