Semko Sawczyuk, 36, boiler washer, sustained fatal injuries attempting to rescue Alexander McNeil, 24, boiler washer, from a machine, Sydney, Nova Scotia, March 15, 1928. McNeil’s clothing became caught on a shaft revolving at a speed of 50 to 60 revolutions a minute, and he was whirled around it. Sawczyuk grabbed at McNeil, but his hand was caught and torn off, and he was thrown to the opposite side of the shaft. He died four days later of his injuries. McNeil was dead when he was removed from the shaft. 28126-2300
