Sheldon Paul Smith, 15, schoolboy, died as the result of saving Patricia M. Jorgensen, 15, from drowning, San Francisco, California, November 5, 1950. While bathing in the Pacific Ocean, Patricia became tired 100 feet from shore in water six feet deep and was unable to return to wadable water because of a strong under-current. She called to Smith, who was eight feet from her and closer to shore, for assistance. Smith swam to Patricia and obtained a hold but in five minutes could progress only 10 feet towing her in waves two feet high. Smith released Patricia and placing his feet against her shoulders thrust her 15 feet to wadable water. Patricia, who was greatly fatigued, waded with difficulty to shore. Smith drifted farther into deep water and was drowned. 42193-3722
