Sherlock R. Patey rescued William Butt, Jr., from burning, Port Hope Simpson, Labrador, Newfoundland, December 15, 1970. William, 17, was seriously burned when the stove exploded in a one-room log cabin, igniting the floor, furnishings, and walls. Patey, 37, lumber camp foreman, entered the smoke-filled cabin and located William, who pulled away from him and disappeared in the smoke. After twice going outside briefly for air, Patey probed in the smoke for William. His parka caught fire, and he sustained minor burns while beating out the flames on it. He then located William and dragged him to the open door, from where another man carried him away. William recovered from his extensive burns.
